NEW BRAND: MAISON MARGIELA
Dec 21, 2020
Since Martin Margiela’s first breakthrough collection in 1989, Maison Margiela has always celebrated unconventional aesthetics based on the philosophy that fashion is an artistic expression rather than a cult for personality. Bonding heritage and deconstruction, Margiela often transformed trash into treasures. Besides the blank labels attached to the garments with four visible stitches, his most iconoclastic pieces are the tabi-toe boots, a men’s waistcoat made of playing cards, a top crafted with vintage gloves, an enlarged doll’s sweater, the wig jacket and many more.
The Belgian designer, who attended the prestigious Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and cut his teeth under Jean Paul Gaultier, earned a reputation as fashion’s mystery man in that he never appeared in interviews or photo shoots. Very few, in fact, knew what he looked like. In 2002, Maison Margiela became part of Renzo Rosso’s OTB and continued to think out of the box with unique fashion creations, further elevated when John Galliano was named Creative Director of the house in 2014, artfully blending his sense of spectacle, daring vision and creative mastery with the unique ethos of Maison Margiela.
