SNEAKER STORIES: NIKE X PIGALLE

The successful collaboration between Nike and Stéphane Ashpool’s Pigalle brand dates back to 2014, driven by the desire to celebrate basketball’s pure cultural impact while supporting a community-building program by providing safe harbors for players. Last year, an initial court in Paris became a hub for the city's players and an international symbol for the game's creative impulses. Both brands aim to bring the Pigalle perspective on safe sport spaces to new cities. "Our court in Paris birthed a community," says Ashpool. "We transformed a parking lot into a place that has fostered a family and inspired people. All the subtle details that can make this magic happen were united. It was the best learning for me, and now it’s the right time to work in expanding this scheme, staying organic, authentic and focused." A second Pigalle court opened in Beijing, China, in 2019 as a testament to China's fervor for basketball and the consequential need to provide a place destined to become a second home for the community. The 600-square-meter space, comprising of the court and surrounding space, was crated with NIKE GRIND with a total of 45,000 pairs of recycled sports shoes. In this light, the latest Nike x Pigalle Collection is right on target with the program’s mantra, which Ashpool calls "the power of sport to move the world forward." It extends his individual view on Nineties-inspired apparel in a manner that is authentic to the Pigalle community. In other words, garments that are equally at ease on court and on street.
