THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ANDRE'' - A DOCUMENTARY ON THE FASHION VETERAN

Whoever has worked the fashion scene over the past decades has had the privilege of bumping into the larger-than-life personality and eccentricity of André Leon Talley, the 67-year-old fashion veteran and former Vogue US editor at large. And, believe me, it’s not an overstatement. So unique is his personality, career and achievements that next month Magnolia Films will release “The Gospel According to André,” a film by Kate Novack that chronicles the life of the fashion guru portrayed in a lively yet intimate manner. It premiered last summer at the Toronto Film Festival. With his towering physique, outlandish style and critically discerning eye, Leon Talley was a fixture on the fashion scene, an influencer who ultimately impacted culture. He admits that people have said nasty things about him like when they called me “Queen Kong because I was a gay ape, but I had to move on, to get on with my career.” Starting with his grandmother, he claims that “all my relatives had style…you can be aristocratic without having been born in an aristocratic family.” Leon Talley grew up where going to Church was “the thing in life,” a weekly appointment that doubled as a fashion show as in the best tradition. The documentary features exclusive interviews with Anna Wintour, Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs, Valentino Garavani, Diane von Furstenberg, Manolo Blahnik, Fran Lebowitz, Whoopi Goldberg and Isabella Rossellini, among others, who describe him as a “black super hero,” one with a “bombastic personality.” He began his career with Andy Warhol’s Factory in the 1970s.
