Chris Gibbs of UNION LA and Hiroshi Fujiwara of Fragment Design sign one of the most iconic silhouettes that reshaped sneaker culture: the Nike Air Jordan 1. First released in 1985, the year Michael Jordan, fresh from winning the NCAA championship with the North Carolina Tar Heels, stepped onto the court for the first time, the Nike Air Jordan 1 redefined the relationship between sport, aesthetics, and urban culture.
The new AJ1, in the “Black/White/Varsity Red/Sport Royal” colorway, features a premium leather color-blocked upper. The stitches along the collar, a recurring element in UNION LA’s design, take on a new significance this year as the Urahara Stitch. Inspired by Ura-Harajuku, the Tokyo neighborhood where ambitious young creatives laid the foundations of global streetwear in the 1990s, this detail embodies decades of cultural exchange between Tokyo and Los Angeles and recalls the first meeting between Chris Gibbs and Hiroshi Fujiwara—a bond that continues to influence their work. The logos of the two brands appear on the collar and heel, while the palette echoes the Fragment x Air Jordan 1, a defining chapter in Fujiwara’s archive and a key aesthetic reference for the collaboration.
