THE SPIRIT OF FREEDOM, A FILM BY SPENCER PHIPPS

American designer Spencer Phipps heads into the wilderness to transport the celebration of the American dream and desert iconography from his SS 2021 collection into a Western-inspired film called “The Spirit of Freedom.” “With my fashion, I like to speak to the different communities around the world and this season, I wanted to reach out to whomever is interested in Americana,” says Phipps, adding how wanted to represent the American culture on merch to make people all over the world be inspired by his country. The film, which stars the designer himself, tells of the journey of a young man, who escapes from a troubled family in search for his missing brother. He finds himself in the desert and discovers a game-changing truth.; In Phipps mind, the tribute to the desert and to the lesser-known American way of life, should remind people of the country’s vastness and diversity. A range of camo prints, chunky ribbed sweater, hand-embroidered south western motifs and desert flower embroideries set each piece apart. Referring to a “responsible preciousness”, Phipps stresses how his eco-friendly pieces are made for longevity, citing how the label’s heavyweight jersey, hoodies and cargo pants, for example, are made to last forever, becoming favorite staples that in time mold to your body shape. Born and raised in San Francisco, Phipps studied at Parsons School of Design in New York City and cut his teeth at Marc Jacobs and at Dries Van Noten. A finalist in the 2019 LVMH Prize edition, Phipps is currently based in Paris.
