OTW by Vans and UNDERCOVER introduce a collaboration that unites Californian attitude with the conceptual vision of Jun Takahashi.
The capsule focuses on two reinterpreted archival silhouettes, Old Skool 36 and Era 95, through an unconventional narrative that highlights outsider art and individual expression.
The Old Skool 36 pays homage to Josep Baqué (1895–1967), a municipal police officer in Barcelona who, in the privacy of his home, created a parallel universe populated by grotesque and magnetic beings. Beginning in the 1930s, Baqué produced more than 1,500 meticulous ink and tempera drawings of hybrid creatures merging human and animal traits, enriched with touches of gold and silver.
His personal bestiary, comprising 454 plates organized into nine thematic categories, ranges from colossal spiders and fantastic serpents to primitive figures and surreal aquatic forms.
A monumental body of work preserved by his niece for nearly four decades after his death, it was finally revealed to the public in 2007 by the Collège de ’Pataphysique, uncovering a solitary artistic vision that harmonizes the bizarre with the sublime.
In contrast with Baqué’s otherworldly imagination, the Era 95 features embroidered portraits of Jun Takahashi’s beloved Jack Russell Terrier, an intimate signature of the UNDERCOVER founder.
The collaboration, available at Antonia Sant'Andrea and online, presents a construction honed in every detail. Each pair has been technically engineered to honor Vans’ heritage while embracing UNDERCOVER’s radical aesthetic.
