Tom Sachs returns to collaborate with Nike with a new version of the General Purpose Shoe, “Bricolage”. The model is part of the NikeCraft General Purpose Shoe project, launched in 2022 and built around the concept of material reuse.
“From the resources around us, we can create our own worlds”: with this premise, Sachs frames the entire logic of the project. Bricolage, he explains, is not a sculptural technique but a way of life: “It is a word artists use, but it is more than a way of making sculpture. It is truly a way of being.”
The waffle-pattern sole pays homage to Bill Bowerman, who in 1971 poured liquid urethane into his wife’s waffle iron plate to create a higher-grip outsole. The tongues are made of nylon, the same material used in high-performance automotive seatbelts. The upper is knitted with knots and draws inspiration from the lacing methods used by explorers. The “NIKE” logo, written in Tom Sachs’ handwriting, is embossed on the heel.
Sachs acknowledges the paradox of a mass-produced object conveying a message about the handmade: “I can make bricolage sculptures for my entire career, but more people will understand what bricolage is and why it matters through a shoe than through the rest of my assembled work.”
“I wear this version of the GPS to symbolize my ongoing commitment to bricolage - and to put it into practice.”
The NikeCraft GPS “Bricolage” is now available in-store and online.
