STEVEN MEISEL EXHIBITION
After Peter Lindbergh, Marta Ortega Perez, the chair of Inditex, is dedicating an exhibition to acclaimed photographer Steven Meisel.
Exploring the successful, prolific and extensive career of the American lensman, “Steven Meisel 1993 A Year in Photographs” will be held in the Spanish city of A Coruña, the home city of Inditex, in November.
The showcase spotlights the year 1993, one of Meisel’s most bountiful with dozens of covers and over 100 editorial spreads for leading glossies, especially Vogue and Vogue Italia. Visitors can soak up over 100 portraits starring supermodels and film personalities including Linda Evangelista, Carla Bruni, Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Jaye Davidson, Barbra Streisand, Isabella Blow, and Twiggy.
One of the most celebrated and powerful fashion photographers in the industry, Steven Meisel is known for his outstanding work in Italian and American Vogue (he has been a protégé of both the late Franca Sozzani and Anna Wintour) and his photos of Madonna in Sex, her 1992 book.
His intrigue for beauty and fascination with models started at an early age. Legend has it that when he was 12 years old, he asked his girlfriends to call up some agencies to get model cards pretending they were Richard Avedon’s secretaries.
A graduate of Parsons The New School for Design with a major in fashion illustration, from an early age he liked to sketch models from fashion magazines rather than playing with toys. One of his first jobs, in fact, was at Halston as an illustrator.
Meisel is credited with "discovering" or promoting the careers of many successful models, including Linda Evangelista, Guinevere Van Seenus, Karen Elson, Amber Valletta, Kristen McMenamy, Stella Tennant, Sasha Pivovarova, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, and Natalia Vodianova. His unique artistic vision also captured the ad imagery for a spate of fashion houses, from Versace to Louis Vuitton and Valentino, from Balenciaga to Prada.
